Starlink-Enabled Asset Tracking

Future-proof tracking with LTE Cat 1bis and Starlink Direct to Cell. Expanded coverage today, satellite connectivity tomorrow.

The Next Evolution in Global Tracking

Ground Control’s land, air and sea tracking devices have always utilized dual-mode satellite and cellular technology, switching networks automatically based on lowest-cost routing. This gives users the best combination of coverage and price.

We’re upgrading the cellular module in our trackers to LTE Cat 1bis, a network technology available everywhere 4G is deployed. This upgrade will expand the areas in which our tracking customers can leverage cellular coverage, so they’ll enjoy even lower usage costs.

A further benefit of this upgrade is that the enabled tracking devices will have the ability to roam on to the Starlink Direct to Cell (D2C) service.

Starlink D2C: What You Need to Know

Starlink’s Direct to Cell service is built using 3GPP standards. These are regularly updated standards created for cellular infrastructure, and since “Release 17”, have also incorporated non-terrestrial networks (NTN). This means that if you have a compatible modem in your tracking device, you can move between terrestrial (cellular) and non-terrestrial networks without needing to modify your device.

However, as of today, Starlink D2C is still in the testing phase. Commercial agreements are currently limited to a few countries, and it’s not clear what the long-term roadmap is for delivering full worldwide rollout. You can see Starlink’s official availability roadmap here.

If / when the network becomes available in your region, our LTE Cat 1bis-enabled tracking devices are built to support this new technology.
