The Iridium 9555 is the perfect satellite telephone because it operates absolutely everywhere on earth with clear voice communications, SMS texting, Email, and a low-speed Internet connection. ...And when we say everywhere, we mean from all polar regions, any open ocean, any continent, stationary, moving or flying as long as the phone (or antenna) is exposed to the open sky.
Ground Control provides the required cabling to establish a connection to the Internet from your laptop and the cost is the same as making a phone call. While the online speed is slow with the Iridium 9555 (2.5 to 10Kbps), it is invaluable when nothing else exists, or as a backup when a primary Internet connection fails. The 9555 in data mode is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista (as of February 8, 2010). Data connectivity will work in any location on the planet where there is open sky. |

The Iridium 9555 is about as easy to use as a typical cell phone. It is assigned an international number so it can make calls to any phone in the world for about $1.50 a minute. All calls it receives are free, however the calling party is charged their rate for calling a satellite phone (rates vary by provider). The "Call Forwarding" feature is handy when you wish incoming calls to be diverted to your cell phone to circumvent higher satellite phone rate to the calling party (when you're in cell range). Of course, the 9555 has all the other phone features you've come to expect.
